Die Grüngebiete im Ruhrgebiet zeichnen sich insbesondere durch die Umnutzung ehemaliger Industriearchitektur für öffentliche Bedürfnisse aus. Zu diesen sogenannten Landschaftsparks zählt der Krupp Park - Park der fünf Hügel, eine Hügellandschaft auf dem ehemaligen Industriegrund in Essen.
Als größter industrieller Landschaftspark Europas gilt der Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord, der auf dem Gelände eines ehemaligen Hüttenwerkes angelegt wurde und vielseitig für Freizeitangebote genutzt wird.
Die ehemalige Zeche Nordstern in Gelsenkirchen wurde zum Gewerbe- und Landschaftspark Nordstern umgestaltet. Und auch der Dienstleistungs- und Gewerbepark Erin in Castrop-Rauxel sowie der Landschaftspark Emscherbruch in Herten wurden auf ehemaligem Bergbaugrund errichtet.
