Stadt- und Landesbibliothek Dortmund

At the important urbanistic hub right opposite Dortmund main station, the new library was opened in 1999 with about 1m media.
The building consists of two different structures: a block of up to seven storeys forms the backbone in front of which we find a glass half-cylinder narrowing down to the bottom.
The block with its natural stone curtain facade made of red quartzite draws upon the surrounding buildings’ height and lines and with its embrasure-like windows and the longitudinal shape reminds one of the city wall formerly found here.
The block accommodates admin, offices and archives.
In the glass curtain we find the public area with the open access library. The glass skin supported by half-timbering visible inside is not linked with the ceilings and thus forms a cover or the open access area’s levels connected by escalators..
Architect Mario Botta was also responsible for the entire interior design.
