Landtag NRW

The current state parliament building opened in 1988 is the fourth such building in, or rather for, North Rhine – Westphalia.
What is special about it is that its shape reflects the parliamentary work done there and thus makes its function visible. In contrast to many historical representative buildings, this parliament building was built as such and its construction was monitored by a committee of MPs.
The characteristic geometrical element is its circular from, extending from the circular chamber visible from the Rhine. The MPs’ offices and admin offices are arranged around the chamber in circular segments as well and spatially open up the entrance situation toward the “Landtagsufer” (the riverbank there). The entrance area itself consists of an open rotunda in which MPs and visitors are received and distributed.
The discreet design of the facade and its integration in Bürgerpark, between Mannesmannufer and the harbour, support the building’s image as a civic building made part of public life.
