Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland

The Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle and the Kunstmuseum Bonn are an urbanistic ensemble and were planned as such. The ensemble consists of two square structures of 96m x 96m and a height of 12m. Their entrance fronts face each other. The former can be used flexibly for temporary exhibitions and
events.
The structure is faced with sandstone and gives a massive impression. A narrow vertical cut gives access into an el fresco lobby and then into the interior. Along the outer walls a 10m deep zone accommodates offices, workshops, a library, exhibition galleries and other secondary rooms. The building’s core accommodates the foyer, the large hall, the atrium and the forum.
A special feature is the roof garden that can be accessed from the forecourt over narrow stairs. It has three light cones, now having become the building’s emblem. These are continued inside as light-conducting columns and contrast with the right angles. The 8,000 sq m roof garden is used for sculpture exhibitions.
