The local diocese’ grammar school Mariengymnasium has a clear profile as a Catholic school for girls in the traditional Essen district of Werden. The objective was to fit the new building into the urbanistic total in a sensitive architectural fashion. The school is adjoined by the basilica and Folkwangschule. The building rests on a natural stone base, above which a transparent structure with a glass facade stands out. The access and road system of the school allows an integration of the yard and the terrace into the surroundings when school is over. The new building is barrier-free and handicapped-friendly.
