“13 Stadthäuser” [13 town houses], Cologne-Junkersdorf

Through the conversion of the 14ha barracks site Haelen a previously isolated area has been re-integrated into the district of Junkersdorf.
At the northern edge of this new quarter, the project “13 Stadthäuser“ [13 town houses] developed, which is designed as a compact block both following the incline and forming the built-up border of a T-shaped water to the north.
The “bulkhead” structure breaks down the overall shape of the block into 13 equal units and determines the view’s rhythm.
The recurrent indentations in form of loggias and terraces within the individual units make for a clear structure of the entire building, breaking up the complex’s overall volume to the south.
In addition, there is now a quiet open area, enclosed by the very green gardens at the back and a rainwater catchment canal.
