red dot design museum

The former boiler house of Zeche Zollverein, Schacht XII, was the power house of the pit, and, like all the other buildings of pit XII, had been designed by architects Schupp and Kremmer in a modern, cubist style with a brick-steel-lattice-formwork curtain facade.
After Zeche Zollverein had been shut down in 1986, the plants were listed. In 1996, the boiler house’s interior was re-designed in accordance with plans by Norman Foster and the Essen firm Böll.
One of the five boilers was preserved as monument to the technology of its time. The others were opened on one side and gutted as far as possible. The exhibition rooms installed in the gutted boilers are accessed by galleries of glass and stainless steel.
Visitors thus got more than 4,000 sq m of exhibition rooms in a synthesis of gigantic industrial machinery and contemporary architecture. Since its conversion was finished, the former boiler house has housed the red dot designmuseum, which presents award-winning product design.
