Vulkan, Cologne

Today’s Vulkan site in Cologne-Ehrenfeld developed from the conversion of the former premises of Vulkan AG, which had been wasteland for quite a long time, and was realised in multiple stages between 2001 and 2004.
On the basis of the conversion plans the first stage saw the demolition of individual unlisted buildings. This provided a better view of the listed buildings and also a more lavish site. These days, the bulk of the site consists of car-free roads and squares, a Boule pitch and a listed park.
The redevelopment and conversion of the old buildings aside, the site was completed by a targeted construction of new buildings.
This led to an interesting mix of old and new buildings, from 1898 to 2004, with rented properties of various spatial qualities. The commercial premises range from studios to office floors in both the old and new buildings and lofts of up to eight metres in height.
The ensemble was completed in 2004 when the "Terrassenhaus" (terraced house) was finished in which living and working are closely combined.
