In the 11the and 12the century, the Roman oval building from the 4th century was extended by a sanctuary and crypt.
Between 1219 and 1227 the late-antiquity building was integrated into a Roman decagon. The collegiate church thus became unique in terms of its spatial arrangement. The old ornamentation includes 13th century wall paintings in the sanctuary and baptistery. The collegiate church’s architectural history ranges from early Christian times to the 13th century. At the core, in all senses of the word, is a 4th century cemetery church, which was extended in a number of stages and changed into the most idiosyncratic building of medieval Cologne architecture marking the boundary between the Romanesque and Gothic style.
