Five Boats

The “Five Boats“ project in Duisburg’s inner port is a modern, flexible office building for a working environment that is permanently changing.
In urbanistic terms, the complex connects the site to the west of the Holzhafen (timber port) with the buildings at Duisburg Innenhafen (inner port). “Ports” as a theme also were incorporated in the design by the London-based Grimshaw Architects.
The office building has 35 identical modular storeys that can be networked horizontally and vertically. The area of the property has been used to the full by opting for a fan-like comb structure. The oval structures are turned longitudinally, which opens up the space in between and make for daylight all over and a clear view of the port and the city of Duisburg.
At night in particular, “Five Boats“ is a striking feature of the port: Freely programmable LEDs in the facade allow variations in colour.
