Umbau Güterhallen im Südpark

Solingen´s southern city centre´s renovation was the major urban development project for the Regionale 2006. One important element was the conversion of the railway wasteland at the former main station into lively Südpark, part of which are the former freight sheds, now preserved, architecturally upgraded and converted. The competition for such conversion had been won by the Cologne architects´ firm Angelis. The design principles are based upon the visibly authentic old parts and distinct completions. The objective was to preserve as much fabric and charm as possible. The sheds were converted in a manner that preserved the buildings´ structure with its filigree steel roof and, as a historical reference, thus also their former use. Today, these former freight sheds accommodate artists´ flats and studios and the city´s Artothek, which, for a small fee, lends works of art. The four adjacent former freight sheds were divided into studios of various size by partitions. Each studio has an access yard on the north side.
In the east of these freight sheds, we find the free-standing former Albrechthalle, which was also preserved and now accommodates the artistic (and gastronomic) “base” called StückGUT, also operated by the Verein zur Förderung des Erhalts und der Umnutzung der Güterhallen e.V. (association for the promotion of the preservation and conversion of the freight sheds)

Opening hours Artothek: Wed + Thu: 5 – 7pm, Sun 11 – 12am
Opening hours StückGUT: Tue - Sun 11am – 11pm
